OUR SERVICES
Organ donation is otherwise known as giving “Gift of Life”. This amazingly generous act saves thousands of lives in the UK every year. Around 7,000 people are on the UK Transplant Waiting List any one time. Sadly, some patients die while waiting for a transplant due to the scarcity of suitable organs for transplant.
We aim to increase awareness about the importance of blood, stem cell and deceased organ donation among the Malayalee communities. The scarcity of stem-cell and organ donors from the Asian community is one of the major challenges faced by the UK healthcare system.
There remains a stark imbalance between the numbers of Asian people donating and those patients in need of a lifesaving transplant. Sadly Black, Asian and minority ethnic patients represent almost a third of those waiting for a lifesaving transplant in the UK. Often the best match for a transplant comes from people of the same ethnic background, so more work must be done to get the message out to people in those communities who aren’t yet on board with the organ donation message.
Stem cell Donation:
For someone with blood cancer or a blood disorder, an amazing stranger donating their stem cells could be their best chance of survival. Joining stem cell donor registry is, providing you an amazing opportunity to save someone’s life during your life time. 90% of people donate via their bloodstream so it’s similar like blood donation. In special circumstances around 10% of people donate through their bone marrow. Due to the scarcity of Asian donors on national stem cell donor registry, many patients from Asian backgrounds are dying. It is important to find a best matched stem cell donor to obtain the successful transplant outcome and ethnicity play a vital role in identifying the best matched donor to recipient. Raising awareness and registering more Asian stem cell donors will save many more lives.
